Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is Occupational Therapy?
Pediatric occupational therapy consists of using a combination of skill, art, and
evidence-informed practices to achieve positive, occupation-focused outcomes with children and families.
The skills learned in an session provide greater coordination, cognitive function and social awareness necessary for day-to-day activities.
3. What should I expect during an occupational therapy evaluation?
On day one, you will talk with the
occupational therapist on the phone first to discuss your child and any developmental concerns. If you decide your child
would benefit from an initial appointment, we will coordinate a date and time for your
child to be seen.
6. How can I support my child’s progress at home?
Number one way to support is by being a loving parent – which you already are!
Sometimes you will be advised to play a game or incorporate techniques into your already established routine. However, our sessions are enough to allow your child to initiate activities to promote their learning during the week, so they will not require a homework list of activities to do at home.
2. How do I know if my child needs occupational therapy?
A healthcare provider can identify concerns about a child’s occupational performance, often developmentally.
As a parent(s), you are your child’s Expert. Never doubt your insight, observations, and intuition as a parent. If you have questions, feel free to contact me to discuss your concerns.
4. How long does my child need to be in occupational therapy?
There is not a specified time a child should be in occupational therapy as it is based on the child’s needs and goals. I work in collaboration with parents and children to determine the amount of time that the child is seen for a given session based on many factors.
Sometimes concerns arise later as the child develops, and then the child may need a short-term spark of occupational therapy to assist them with new developmental challenges in which I am happy to provide.
Open communication is vital to success!
7. Will occupational therapy be covered by insurance?
Depending on your insurance
company, the service may be in or out of network. My office accepts Medicaid of Maryland coverage.
Check with your insurance company to determine your benefits. Most insurance
companies list occupational therapy as a covered service, but call to see if pre-
authorization is needed and other details of coverage.
